Crime, the resulting legal process, and prison may not directly impact you....or so you think.
Each and every one of us is affected as area crime rates can effect our insurance premiums, home prices, school funding and more.
The idea that we don't know anyone who is in prison doesn't negate the fact that we need to be aware of the overall influence of crime on the things that are near and dear to us.
We all need to take part in the solution. We believe that the only way to turn these trends is to heal the ones affected through counseling, support, mentoring, and prayer.
Only through personal responsibility and the support of our community can we affect change.
Some statistics that may help make the point:
- There were 50,000 prisoners in Michigan's 45+ prisons in 2006.
- Of the 11,000 state penitentiary paroles each year, 48% will re offend in the first two years.
- Parole failure costs the state $117,000,000, each year.
- The state corrections budget makes up approx. 20% of the general fund (just under $2 billion) annually.
- The annual cost to educate each one of our K-12 students is $6,800, but it is $30,000 to house one inmate.
